Set up is simple and your first 30 days of monitoring are free.  Service beyond the first month is $15/mo but no contract is required.  As an alternative you can pay for requests a la carte: $0.99 per location request or $4.99 for each tracking request.

The battery will hold a charge for days and you’ll receive a message when the battery is low to assure that there is no lapse in coverage.
