Review & Giveaway: Williams-Sonoma Whoopie Pie Pan & Mix

Whoopie pies were created generations ago.  American country homemakers used to place them inside lunch boxes for an afternoon surprise.  The sandwich like cookies are said to have earned their name from the shouts of delight from everyone who tastes them.

I had never heard of Whoopie Pies before but when I saw the picture above, I couldn’t wait to try them- don’t they look scrumptious?  Williams-Sonoma makes a special pan to make the perfect little mini flat cakes that you use to sandwich in a cream filling.  They also make a Whoopie Pie Mix Set that includes mixes for the cakes and the filling.  The pan comes with a recipe for a homemade version.

I tested out the mix with the pan.  Somehow my cake mix came out pretty thick.  I thinned it down slightly with some milk and the cakes ended up coming out just right.  The mix was super easy to use- you just add a couple of ingredients (like milk and butter) and it’s ready to go.  The cakes only took 7 minutes to bake too!  I’m embarrassed to show the picture of my own Whoopie Pie, especially compared to the beautiful picture above but here it is anyway:It may not look as pretty but it still tasted good.  The Whoopie pie mix is a blend of red velvet cake mix and Callebaut red cocoa which gives the cakes a dark red hue and chocolate flavoring.  The filling mix can be customized with butter or cream cheese to make a light fluffy vanilla filling (I used cream cheese- yum!).  Each mix set makes 12 pies.

The shallow Whoopie Pie pan from Williams-Sonoma is constructed of heavy-guage aluminized steel with a ceramic-reinforced nonstick surface.  Each pan makes 12 pieces which are later used as the tops and bottoms of the finished Whoopie Pie.
