I was offered the opportunity to try Lullabelly shortly after I became pregnant with my third. I had never tried something like this with my first two so I couldn’t wait until my growing baby was developed enough to try it out.
It is well known that developing fetuses can hear and react to sounds. Some experts believe that exposing babies to music while in the womb helps stimulate the baby’s senses and improves brain development. With Lullabelly, you can introduce your baby to music safely and comfortably. Lullabelly is a prenatal music belt which is worn around the belly of an expectant mother. An MP3 player or ipod is connected and stored in a pocket in the belt. Both baby and mother can listen to and bond over mom’s favorite tunes. A dual adapter allows mom to control the volume level separately from her own earphones and the baby’s speaker. The maximum volume level for the baby is set for safety. It is similar to someone speaking or singing directly to the baby in the womb.
Around week 20, the baby is developed enough to hear noises outside of the womb- a good time to start using Lullabelly. The timing makes this a perfect and unique shower gift. Lullabelly is machine washable, adjustable up to 52 inches (another 18 inches can be added with an extension strap), and retails for about $55. It is available in pink, blue or green.
I started using Lullabelly around 24 weeks. While it’s fun to think I am exposing the baby to music, I didn’t notice a clear reaction to it. In fact, this baby seems to be a little shy. My husband has only felt the baby kick a handful of times because every time he tries, the baby goes completely still. Sometimes it wiggles with the music on, sometimes it doesn’t. Perhaps sometimes it’s dancing to the beat and sometimes it’s lulled to sleep. Who knows? For those that want to expose their baby to literature, audio books can be played. For those who want to expose their baby to classics like Beethoven and Mozart, just play it through the Lullababy. We have more fun trying to see if our baby prefers Country tunes or hits like California Gurls by Katy Perry!
