My husband and I went away for the weekend, leaving our 1 year old and 3 year old with grandparents for the first time ever. It was fabulous! But we came home to an almost bare refrigerator and no energy to go grocery shopping. Safeway.com to the rescue! We had never used a grocery delivery service before but with a coupon code for free delivery and $7 off our order, it was the perfect time to try it out! We quickly came up with a short list of meals we wanted for the week and I “went shopping”. I loved that I was getting one of my most dreaded chores out of the way while I sat on the couch in my pajamas and my children played with their toys. I filled my virtual cart, using the Safeway ad and my list as a guide. Then I selected a delivery window for the next day and checked out. Delivery prices range from $6.95 to $12.95 depending and the hours and length of time window. You can select a two hour window or a 4 hour one. Since my delivery was free this time around, I selected the short window that worked best for me- 10-12 the next morning.
My kids went without milk for breakfast (I told you our fridge was empty!) but by 10:45 the delivery truck had pulled up and a very friendly driver unloaded bags of groceries right onto my kitchen table. I felt like I had my own personal assistant! The kids ate lunch while I put away my groceries and I didn’t even break a sweat! At 8 1/2 months pregnant and toting two toddler, grocery shopping nearly wipes me out these days so this delivery service was a real blessing. No carrying groceries up the stairs, no whining kids begging for cookies in the grocery aisles, just bags and bags of everything I needed right there in my kitchen!
Drivers are not allowed to accept tips but they do appreciate a call to customer service for feedback. Our driver, Ray, was great. He said hello to my kids and even told this silly joke: “What’s the difference between the bird flu and the swine flu? One needs oinkment and one needs tweetment”. He was very pleasant and helpful and I appreciated his honesty when he let me know that they cannot accept tips.
As much as this experience delighted me, there were a few drawbacks. I could have used a lot more coupons in-store than online. Safeway.com does accept Cellfire, shortcuts.com and P&G eSaver coupons though. You are also eligible for promos so I ordered 4 boxes of General Mills Cereal which was on sale buy four save $4 instantly. Unfortunately, they were out of one of the types I ordered and since I had selected “no substitutions” on my entire order, I missed out on this savings. This may have been a rookie mistake that I could have avoided by selecting a different type of cereal on the same promo as a sub. The reason I chose no substitutions was because a) it was easier and b) it could negatively affect my cost. I hadn’t taken the promo into consideration.
You can add notes to your “personal shopper” to add preferences like “green bananas”. I ordered some deli sliced ham and used the notes section to ask for 1/2″ slices so that I could cube it. It arrived sliced. Other than that, there weren’t any problems with our order.
Safeway.com delivery service is great especially for certain circumstances like when you are ill or just had a baby. For me, it might be easier (and cheaper!) to place an order rather than hire a baby sitter to avoid the hassle of taking three kids age three and under with me to do the shopping.
Another upside to ordering online is that it was much easier to stick to my list and my budget. I wasn’t tempted by cookies and doughnuts that we don’t need. I could just type in “bread” and then select the variety based on price/needs.
Overall, my experience shopping with Safeway.com was a very pleasant one and certainly a service I would use again. You can try it yourself with an exclusive savings code from Mommies with Cents. You’ll not only get free delivery but you’ll also save $7 off your order with code momcents.

I used to love HomeGrocer.com when we lived in town. They went out of business and we moved too. I’d love to use this service.
I don’t see a button to submit for $100 gift card.
