This little beauty has lots of energy and loves to be outdoors. Years ago her pediatrician recommended that I keep her out of the sunlight due to her sensitive skin and the fact that she seemed to have an intolerance for sunscreen . That was neither practical nor realistic for our active family. Over the years and with a lot of trial and error, we’ve found ways to protect her skin while still allowing her to enjoy the things that she loves.
5 Tips for Children with Sensitive Skin
- Skip daily baths/showers. The oils in your skin are it’s natural protectant and moisturizer. Bathing too frequently can strip that away unnecessarily as kids don’t usually need daily bathing until their tweens/teens.
- Use warm water, not hot. The hotter the water you use, the more drying it is to the skin. Make sure to use warm water instead of hot.
- Use a natural moisturizer. We really love using fractionated coconut oil. It’s odorless and since it’s in liquid form, it’s easy to apply with a spray bottle and it soaks right into the skin. Many ingredients in other types of moisturizers can actually have a really negative effect so it’s important for us to avoid those with fragrance, alcohol etc.
- Cover up. While we don’t keep our daughter out of the sun, we do try to keep her covered up as much as possible. Look for bathing suits and clothing with built in SPF and a cute wide brimmed hat for extra protection. We really like the Coolibar brand for sun wear.
- Find a sunscreen you trust. Last but not least, find a sunscreen that works for your family. They are NOT all created equally! We tried several organic brands and my daughter had bad reactions to them. It’s all trial and error but start with a formula made specifically for sensitive skin like Blue Lizard Sensitive, a formula that has worked well for us.
Blue Lizard is ranked as a top sunscreen by the Environmental Working Group. They have very high standards for their products. Every single one has broad spectrum coverage which protects you from both the burning UVB rays as well as the harmful UVA rays that can cause sun damage and are most associated with aging and melanoma.
Additionally, Blue Lizard’s Regular and Sport formulas meet the U.S. water resistance standard of 80 minutes which is the highest that can be claimed by manufacturers. In testing though, Blue Lizard’s sunscreen stayed on for 4 hours in 105 degree whirlpool water. Amazing right?
The sensitive formula offers 30+ SPF and is chemical-free, Paraben-free and fragrance free, all things I look for in a non-irritating sunscreen.
All four of the Blue Lizard full spectrum sunscreen formulas (Baby, Sport, Sensitive & Regular) can be purchased by the gallon. For our family of 5, this is a convenient way to stay stocked for the summer and since Blue Lizard sunscreen is doctor, dermatologist and pharmacist recommended, I feel confident that it’s a safe sunscreen we can use without worries year round.
You can find out more and purchase Blue Lizard products online at www.bluelizard.net. Use code P20MWCNTS for 20% OFF orders over $35. (Expiration 9/30/16) You can also use the Store Locator to find a store near you that sells it.
