For most, etiquette is simply using common sense. Things aren’t as strict as they once were and things that were once proper etiquette have fallen by the wayside. A hand written thank you note for example. My grandmother mails me a hand written note after nearly every visit with her thanking us for the lovely time spent together. While completely unnecessary, I really enjoy receiving those notes and they make me feel good. I was taught to write thank you notes for gifts as a child and intend to teach my children the same. That being said, more often than not, I just shoot off an email or a quick message on Facebook and tell myself “it’s the thought that counts”. The book Where is Your Mother? covers all types of everyday etiquette from leaving gratuities, thank you gifts for different occasions, eating out with children, even the more modern use of cell phones. The book covers so much more. In fact, it was a bit more than I cared to learn by sitting down to read. That being said, it’s a great reference when you find yourself wondering what proper etiquette would call far. The chapters are clearly outlined but in my opinion much too wordy. It’s a bit hard to skim for the meaty details you’re looking for.
