A few years ago I probably didn’t even know what the word gluten referred to. Gluten is the substance that remains when the flour of wheat or other grains is washed to remove the starch.Today, it’s important for me to know what foods contain gluten as well as some alternatives for these products for a few people in our lives who cannot tolerate it. Gluten is in a LOT of products, many that you wouldn’t have even thought of. I’ve learned to read labels and seek out comparable products that are gluten free. Luckily, these types of products are becoming more main stream. In fact, Pillsubury has just introduced gluten free doughs to grocery stores nationwide. This specialty product is widely available so there won’t be any special trips natural food stores when circumstances require the need to serve gluten free.
Pillsburys line of Gluten Free dough includes 3 varieties:
- Pie and Pastry Dough: 15.8-oz. tub, makes two 9″ pie crusts, 250 calories per serving, MSRP $4.99.
- Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough: 14.3-oz. tub, makes approximately sixteen 2″ cookies, 110 calories per serving, MSRP $4.49.
- Thin Crust Pizza Dough: 13-oz. tub, makes one 10″ pizza crust, 170 calories per serving, MSRP $4.99.
All three come ready to bake in convenient refrigerated containers. I love this because I don’t keep special flours on hand to make these items from scratch. I can just pick up a tub when I need it! We especially like the chocolate chip cookie dough because it’s typically get-togethers with snacks or treats the call for something gluten free. These cook up really well — nice and fluffy. They texture is only slightly different than a “normal” chocolate chip cookie but I actually really liked them!
Pillsbury teamed up with Iron Chef Cat Cora to create a variety of tasty gluten free recipes using the new Pillsbury Doughs. You can find them at www.pillsbury.com/
