“Mom, can I have a quarter? Pleeeease!?” I remember annoying my own mother with this question. I’m sure she hated all of the little toys that came out of those little vending machines at grocery stores and pizza joints. But oh, how I loved them. Especially if the were “collectible”. Because of this, I’ve vowed to at least try to keep this in mind when my own kids plead for their own quarter.
Sqwishlanders are little rubbery creatures that are sold in vending machines and retail stores everywhere. Each collectible creature comes with a code for access to a virtual world on www.sqwishland.com where users can play games, feed and take care of their Sqwishlanders. For $.25 to $.50 a pop, starting a collection is easy! Each 3/4″ animal comes in a little plastic bubble capsule with a tiny slip of paper containing the access code to the online world. To build your collection quicker, 6, 12, and 24 multi-packs are available at Toys ‘R Us, CVS, Walgreens, H-E-B, Michaels and Meijer stores. There is also a new Party Mix 24-pack that comes in a collectible jumbo capsule available at Justice and Learning Express Stores. All of the multipacks come with a certain number of rare and ultra rare Sqwishlanders, but they’re packaged in opaque capsules– so you never know what you’re going to get! Brand new Mystery Capsules with an Ultra Rare Jumbo Sqwishlander (2″ instead of 3/4″) are now available at specialty retailers, and will be coming to Justice stores in early 2011.
We received a box full of Swishlanders to test out and my son and I had a ball opening all of them up together. It was a process we went through together. I removed the plastic seal and Jackson popped them open to discover the Swishlander inside. He removed the tiny slips of paper and put them in a separate pile. When we were finished Jackson had fun lining them all up and matching the duplicates. He asks to play with them almost every day while his sister is napping. Since these toys are so small, we keep them put away unless closely supervised. McKinley has taken to putting things in her mouth and these gummy little creatures sort of resemble something edible, at least to her.
Since Jackson is still a bit young for online games, I tried to access sqwishland.com on my own. Unfortunately, my laptop would not fully cooperate with the website and I was never able to see how the game worked. From what I could see though, it looks like a really fun site for kids.
I don’t know if Pokemon are still “in” but Sqwishlanders could be their distant cousins, their little capsules like pokeballs. They’d be perfect for stocking stuffers (I wish I had saved some aside!), small birthday gifts or incentive/reward treats!
