Here is this weeks FAQ from eBeanStalk:
What do I do if my child does not consistently respond when I ask them to do something?
By: Shari Harpaz, CCC-SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist)
For our busy youngsters it can be difficult to focus on auditory (sounds we hear) information when they are playing with toys and/or engaged in activities.
Here’s what I recommend:
Try walking closer to your child and getting down to his/her eye level.
Make sure your child is looking at you before you begin to give the direction or ask the question.
Speak slowly. Speak simply.
Sometimes it’s hard to remember that our little ones need a little extra something when it comes to giving directions- especially when we are in a hurry to get out the door. It helps to realize that we might actually be able to get out the door quicker if we take that extra second to get down to our child’s level and tell them exactly what we need from them in a clear manner- “Put your coat on, then get your back pack- it’s time to go”. Shouting directions from the bathroom while we are brushing our teeth isn’t nearly as effective!
What techniques to you use to get your child to follow directions? We’d love to hear from you- please leave a comment!
